Background
Environment Jobs Scotland (EJS) was a programme of activities developed by Forward Scotland to support the implementation of Scotland's ‘Green Jobs’ strategy.
Forward Scotland developed the EJS initiative to build on the work of the Jobs in the Environment Support Unit (JITESU). Between 2002 and 2004 JITESU researched and promoted the potential of the environment sector to provide long term viable employment with particular emphasis on the Environment Task Force Option of the New Deal in Scotland.
The EJS initiative expanded on this work, demonstrating the potential of the environment sector to provide long-term jobs and career options. The initiative worked in close partnership with key agencies to anchor and then mainstream the good practice and experience developed.
As well as supporting implementation of the emerging Green Jobs Strategy, EJS was also complementary to other policy drivers including Community Planning, “Choosing Our Future” - the Scottish Executive’s sustainable development strategy, and local economic development policy.
The initiative conducted research into measures to strengthen the capacity of communities and community sector organisations across Scotland in order to respond to Scotland's changing agenda and realise the full potential for active engagement and participation.
